𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐄𝐑 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐏𝐒 French Line Infantry 𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐘 "One Against Ten" During the War of the Fifth Coalition, at the Battle of Graz mid summer 1809, two battalions of the 84e Regiment of Line Infantry defended against dozens of battalions of Austrian Landwehr. After mounting a strong defense at a church cemetery, the regiment escaped destruction, breaking through the enemy and returning to friendly lines. With only 34 dead and around 200 wounded, the regiment inflicted over 500 casualties on the Austrians. For this heroic deed, Emperor Napoleon decreed that the regiment was allowed to add "One Against Ten" on their colors. As line infantry, the men are expected to fight in tight, disciplined formations, using punishing volleys of musket fire.
