By the 13th century, the Hospitallers had become one of the most powerful military orders in the Holy Land. From mighty fortresses such as Krak des Chevaliers, they held the line against overwhelming forces, guarding key routes and standing as a bulwark against their enemies. Now, in the year of our Lord 1310, the situation grows ever more dire. The Kingdom of Jerusalem weakens, and the forces of the East press harder with each passing year.
